US pledges $10 million to UN-Hariri tribunal

UNITED NATIONS — The United States is giving an additional $10 million to the UN-backed tribunal set up to prosecute the assassins of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
US Ambassador Susan Rice announced the donation Wednesday, saying the tribunal must continue operating and expressing confidence its work can help deter further violence in Lebanon and end impunity for political assassinations.
Rice's comments came hours after Judge Antonio Cassese, the president of the tribunal, which is facing increasing criticism in Lebanon, appealed to the Lebanese to give the court a chance to show it can dispense impartial justice. He expressed hope that prosecutors will issue an indictment by December.
