Anise is a familiar spice that adds a sweet flavor and a licorice-like aroma to baked goods and desserts, as well as to mulled wine in the winter season. But beyond its taste, studies indicate that anise seeds may offer surprising health benefits, including a possible contribution to improving mood.

Anise seeds are rich in essential minerals, including iron – which contributes to brain function and the immune system – and manganese, which is important for maintaining bones and protecting the body’s cells. Previous studies have found that the plant’s seeds may help reduce symptoms of depression and even ease menopausal symptoms.

Relief from hot flashes and improved mood

Menopause, characterized by a natural decline in reproductive hormones, affects tens of millions of women worldwide each year. Common symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, and mood changes.

In a study conducted in Tehran, it was found that consuming anise seeds reduced the frequency and severity of hot flashes by nearly 75%. In addition, two other studies showed that taking anise seed powder or capsules three times a day helped alleviate symptoms of postpartum depression and mild to moderate depression.

Studies from Italy indicated that anise oil may help reduce inflammation, while a study from China found that anise seeds have antibacterial properties.

Safety and use

In most cases, anise consumption is considered safe and its use is not accompanied by significant side effects. However, it is recommended to consult a doctor before regular use, especially for people with certain hormonal conditions or allergies.

In cooking, one to two teaspoons of anise are usually used, and a daily intake of up to 20 grams of anise seed powder is considered safe for healthy adults. In addition, it is a low-calorie spice – about 23 calories per tablespoon.
