ROME — Tens of thousands of people have marched in Rome to protest Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and demand his resignation.

The protest Saturday came just a few days after Berlusconi survived a confidence vote in parliament.

But the premier is weakened by a breakup with right-wing leader and longtime ally Gianfranco Fini. Even though Berlusconi survived the confidence vote, his majority in the lower house depends on breakaway lawmakers loyal to Fini, making the long-term stability of the government uncertain.

Berlusconi is midway through his five-year term.

On Saturday, people gathered under banners saying "Let's Fire Him!" and "Italy Wake Up!"

The protest was organized by The Purple People, a citizen movement that mobilizes on the Internet.
