Kyrgyzstan citizen charged in Boston bombing probe due in court

BOSTON - A Kyrgyzstan citizen charged with hampering the investigation into the Boston Marathon bombing by denying details of his relationship with the suspects is due in court Wednesday for a hearing on whether he should be released on bail.

Khairullozhon Matanov, a 23-year-old taxi driver who lives in Quincy, Massachusetts, faces one criminal count of destroying records and three counts of lying to officials in a terrorism investigation. He is not charged with taking part in April 15, 2013, attack, which killed three people and injured more than 260.

US prosecutors contend that on the night of the bombing, he took the two ethnic Chechen brothers accused in the attack, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, out to dinner. Three days later, when the FBI released pictures of the two at the scene of the blasts, identifying them as possible suspects, Matanov deleted searches related to the attacks from his computer and tried to dispose of cell phones he had used to contact the brothers.

Matanov entered the United States in 2010 on a student visa and was later granted political asylum due to ethnic clashes in his native Kyrgyzstan, according to his attorney.
