Culture Minister Limor Livnat issued a statement Monday congratulating Jerusalem-born, American-Israeli actress Natalie Portman on Monday for winning the Oscar for best actress.
Livnat said Portman "brought pride to Israel" and expressed hope that an Israeli film would win in the best foreign film category after three movies had received nominations in that category in the previous three years.
A source close to Livnat said that Portman, who studied at Hebrew University and visits frequently, will always be Israeli no matter where she lives.
