Meretz chief: Jewish and democratic Basic Law comes at expense of non-Jewish citizens

Meretz leader Zehava Gal-On said on Thursday that the proposed law stating Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people could have devastating results.

"The real aim of the legislation proposed by MKs Yariv Levin and Ayelet Shaked is not to protect the existence of Israel as the state of the Jewish people, but rather to bring the word 'Jewish' to the forefront while pushing the word 'democratic' to the back burner."

She noted that the new definition comes at the expense of being a democratic state and elevates the Jews over the rest of the citizens of Israel.

"Rather than defining Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people and all its citizens, these Knesset members prefer a state of just one people, which ignores the rest of Israel's citizens."
