Peres sends condolences over death of writer Yoram Kaniuk

President Shimon Peres on Sunday sent a condolence message to writer Yoram Kaniuk's family in which he wrote that Kaniuk's death was a loss not only to the world of literature but to the culture and vitality of Israel.
Kaniuk wrote through his own unique prism, and gave expression to Israel's spirit through his distinctive style of writing which was at once raging yet compassionate, Peres continued.
He was never afraid to deviate from the well trodden route and to follow his own path. He never compromised on his inner, original and powerful truth nor on the acute perception which guided him even when he defied the consensus, wrote Peres, who concluded the message with his firm belief that Kaniuk's writings will continue to be part of the national heritage for years long beyond his death.
