French President Nicolas Sarkozy recommended that Palestinian state recognition at the United Nations be viewed as an intermediate step on the path to an eventual peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians.

The French president suggested that negotiations would have to begin within six months following the UN resolution, which would define the borders of Israel and Palestine.

Then, a final deal would have to be reached within a year.
