Schneller: Citizenship law ruling supports two-state logic

MK Otniel Schneller (Kadima) on Thursday praised a decision by the High Court of Justice upholding the Citizenship and Entry Law, saying that a different decision would have moved Israel toward the one-state solution advocated by both the radical Left and Right. The citizenship law prevents Palestinians married to Israelis from naturalizing as Israeli citizens.

"The High Court decision articulates the rationale of separation between the (two) peoples and the need to maintain a Jewish majority and the (Jewish) character of the state. If the minority opinion had been accepted, it would have undermined the central argument justifying two states for two peoples and contradicted the demand that settlers give up their homes in the name of peace."

He added that the decision "affirms the majority of Israeli citizens' desire to maintain Israel as a Jewish state, alongside a Palestinian state."
