Boris Lifshitz, 87, was stabbed in the chest and seriously wounded in his Rishon Lezion apartment on Tuesday by an unknown assailant, in a mysterious attack which police say was not a robbery. Lifshitz received a phone call in which he was asked by a man to come downstairs. The caller claimed there was a problem with the water meter, according to Rishon Lezion police. Lifshitz opened his door to head downstairs, when he was suddenly stabbed by a man said to be in his 30s. He had been at home with his wife and caretaker during the attack. The caretaker was the only witness to the stabbing, and later told officers she had attempted to push the attacker away. Lifshitz was rushed to Assaf Harofeh Hospital, Tzrifin, unconscious and in serious condition. Police launched a large-scale manhunt for the attacker based on eyewitness testimony taken from the caretaker, but were not able to arrest a suspect by Tuesday night.
