Two 12-year-old Palestinian boys were killed and two other teenagers were injured Tuesday near Hebron when unexploded ordinance exploded, Palestinian news agencies reported.
The old mortar shell exploded in a field containing scrap metal, in which the boys had been playing.
An IDF Spokesman said an initial investigation indicated that the blast was caused by "unexploded ordnance that was ignited", but had no further details.
Reuters contributed to this report.
