A year after IDF Operation Cast Lead, a statement released by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday made clear that the international arena remained severely critical of the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the part Israel allegedly played in its creation. Ban's statement said he was "deeply concerned that neither the issues that led to this conflict nor its worrying aftermath are being addressed." While the statement praised Egypt's efforts to mediate between the rival Palestinian factions, it stressed that, "The quality and quantity of humanitarian supplies entering Gaza is insufficient, broader economic and reconstruction activity is paralyzed, and the people of Gaza are denied basic human rights." Ban stated that there could be no military solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict and urged the two sides to agree to a two-state solution. "There is a sense of hopelessness in Gaza today for 1.5 million Palestinians, half of whom are under eighteen," he said. "Their fate and the well-being of Israelis are intimately connected."
