The socioeconomic cabinet announced Wednesday the establishment of a state company to plan and manage the restoration of the Dead Sea. The new company will be responsible for the short- and long-term solutions to the area's special problems, including halting the fall in sea level, as part of plans to protect the beaches and areas around hotels, and the region's nature preserves. According to the Tourism Ministry, once these projects are completed, the company will be dismantled. The sea level has been receding for years because water is being taken from the Jordan River before it reaches the Dead Sea. The tourist industry, which includes 12 hotels, and entertainment and commercial centers, is concentrated in Ein Bokek on the southern shores of the Dead Sea.
