SAN JOSE MINE, Chile – A third man has been rescued as Chile works to free 33 miners trapped for 69 days in a collapsed gold and copper mine.
Fifty-two-year-old Juan Illanes is a married former soldier who urged his fellow miners to be disciplined and organized while stuck a half-mile underground.
A second miner, Mario Sepulveda Espina, was pulled to the surface about an hour later after the first miner was pulled out — his shouts heard even before the capsule surfaced. After hugging his wife, Elvira, he jubilantly handed souvenir rocks from his underground prison to laughing rescuers.
The effort will continue until all miners are rescued.
