Abraham Fund attempting to appeal Weinstein ruling

An NGO that works to promote coexistence between Israeli Jews and Arabs hopes to appeal a decision by Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein not to investigate a religious ruling criticized as anti-Arab, it announced Tuesday.

The Abraham Fund hopes to take the case to the Supreme Court despite the fact that Weinstein is investigating comments by one of the ruling's most prominent signatories, Safed Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu. The ruling called for Jews not to rent apartments to Arabs.

“Weinstein legitimized a racist ruling – not to rent to Arabs – as government policy and gave it the seal of systematic discrimination against Arab citizens. Rabbi Eliyahu is a civil servant, member of the Chief Rabbinate and spiritual leader of a wide laity, who will then obey his ruling,” the Abraham Fund said in a statement.

According to the statement, the Abraham Fund welcomed the decision to open an investigation against Rabbi Eliyahu for other remarks, but said it was not sufficient. “The Attorney General sent a potentially disastrous message to the Arab minority in particular, and Israeli society in general. This decision increases Arab citizens’ sense of alienation vis-à-vis the State of Israel.”
