Army Radio: Guards who displayed negligence in 'Prisoner X' suicide not terminated

Three Prisons Service guards found to have shown negligence in the circumstances surrounding the December 2010 suicide in Ayalon Prison of Ben Zygier, an alleged Mossad agent known as Prisoner X, will be not be removed from the service, Army Radio reported Tuesday.

Prisons Service spokeswoman Sivan Weitzman said that the decision was made some time before Tuesday and relates to the policy that the final responsibility for the suicide of a prisoner falls on the deceased – not the service.

“There have been other suicides in prison, and I don’t remember anywhere they blamed the guards for it. At the end of the day, people kill themselves because they want to kill themselves.”

She also said that ultimately Zygier’s tragic death is not different from any number of other far less famous prisoners who have killed themselves in prison.

In December 2012, a report by Judge Daphna Blatman Kedrai, president of the Rishon Lezion Magistrate’s Court, found the Prisons Service to blame for Zygier’s death, saying that it did not fulfill its duty to prevent his death.
