US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director Bill Burns visited Israel this week for high-level meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Mossad chief David Barnea, KAN News reported earlier on Friday.

The CIA chief, whose visit came amid an escalation of security tensions in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, also met with Egyptian President Ahmed Fattah El-Sisi as part of his trip to the Middle East.

Burns joined other high-profile American officials to visit the Middle East in recent times.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan was in Israel earlier in January for talks with the prime minister, who touched on pressing issues in the Middle East such as the organization of a united front against Iran and a potential normalization deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

UN Security Council to hold meeting on Jenin raid

Late on Thursday night, two rockets fired from the Gaza Strip were intercepted by the IDF, who in retaliation struck an underground rocket production facility and a "significant" military camp belonging to Hamas.

The Gaza rocket fire was in response to the bloody IDF raid on Jenin earlier on Thursday in which nine Palestinians were killed. The United Nations Security Council in New York is set on Friday to hold a closed-door meeting on the IDF's Jenin raid.
