Bar-Ilan University to allow gay pride event after criticism of ban

Bar-Ilan University has agreed to host an event marking Gay Pride Month in the public areas of the campus in Ramat Gan on Sunday.

The National Union of Israeli Students and the university announced the agreement on Thursday, after harsh criticism from MKs and social organizations, including Havruta, an NGO that offers social and support network for Orthodox LGBT people in Israel, on Wednesday of the university’s initial decision to only allow a symposium in a closed auditorium.

The event will include information booths set up by various LGBT groups, which will be allowed to hand out pamphlets, and music to be played in between classes, the agreement letter, signed by Prof. Uri Nir, dean of students, states.

Omer Machluf, head of the “Pride” student group at Bar-Ilan and university spokesman Haim Zisovitch issued a joint statement regarding a quote published by Haaretz, in which he seemed to draw a parallel between homosexuality and pedophilia, was taken out of context from a telephone conversation between Zisovitch and a reporter for the newspaper. “The university spokesman clarified that the statements quoted and attributed to him were false, and he apologized for any harm this caused to members of the gay community.”
