Damascus: Burns “hopeful of progress” with Syria

“Syria plays an important role in the Middle East and this is a moment in which both Syria and the United States have a stake in exploring ways in which we might cooperate,” US Undersecretary of State William Burns said Thursday following his meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus.
Burns was the highest ranking American official to visit Syria in five years.
The White House announced on Wednesday  that Robert Ford will be the next American ambassador to Syria if he is confirmed by the US Senate.
Burns went on to say that while he has “no illusions about the challenges on the road ahead,” he left his meeting with President Assad “hopeful that we can make progress together in the interests of both of our countries.”
