Hamas releasing 55 Fatah prisoners in gesture

Hamas said Tuesday that they were releasing 55 prisoners from the rival Fatah movement as a gesture for the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The Hamas statement said 50 other prisoners would also be freed. The Hamas Interior Ministry said the release would take place Wednesday. Hamas wrested control of Gaza from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement two years ago, setting off a wave of mutual arrests. Hamas has demanded that Abbas free hundreds of its activists from West Bank prisons. Also, an Egyptian delegation talked to Palestinian officials in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Monday. The visit and the prisoner release might be linked to another attempt at reconciliation.
