Health Ministry notes increase in dysentery infections

Due to an increase since November 2009 of Shigella infections that cause dysentery, the Health Ministry reminded the public on Monday to observe strict rules of hygiene all year round -- but especially during the summer months when the bacteria spread more easily. Members of the public should wash their hands regularly in running water and with soap after going to the toilet, after diapering babies and before feeding children.
The Shigella dysentry outbreaks since November have been mostly concentrated in Jerusalem, Netanya, Beit Shemesh and Betar Illit. The most common age of infection is is in children aged one to four years.
