Hebrew U. gets high int'l ranking for comp. sci, economics

Among the world’s top 100 universities, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has been ranked 21st in the teaching of computer science and 44th in economics and business. This was announced on Sunday after HU was informed a few days ago by the Academic Ranking of World Universities issued by China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

In computer science teaching, HU ranked ahead of prestigious academic institutions like Yale University, Cambridge University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In economics and business, it came ahead of Brown University, Georgetown University and the London Business School. In the field of social sciences, the Hebrew University ranked 46th and was judged among the top 75 universities in the field of mathematics and natural sciences.

Every year, Shanghai Jiao Tong University evaluates more than 2,000 universities in the world and ranks the top 500 among them. The rankings, which have achieved respected world recognition, are based on a combined scale of academic criteria that include awards won by alumni and staff, articles published in leading scientific journals, and the number of highly cited researchers.

Prof. Dan Galai, dean of the School of Business Administration, said "this is an impressive achievement which, among other things, results from our efforts in the last few years to recruit for the school a leading and dynamic young group of excellent staff in the areas of both research and teaching."
