High Court to deliberate on haredi conscription Sunday

The High Court of Justice will consider on Sunday a petition against an amendment that gives the defense minister sweeping powers to exempt haredi yeshiva students from military service.
The petition was submitted by Yesh Atid MK Elazar Stern and the National Union of Israeli students in November. It seeks to reinstate decisions made by the previous government that included Yesh Atid, which were canceled by the current government at the behest of Shas and United Torah Judaism.
For instance, The current government postponed the implementation of obligatory enlistment of full-time yeshiva students, which was supposed to come into effect in 2017, until 2020, after which the defense minister will have the authority to exempt yeshiva students from military or civilian service if he so wishes, while bearing in mind targets established by the government.
