Hit by hurricane, Saint Marten in 'total blackout'

Hurricane Irma seriously damaged infrastructure on the Dutch side of Saint Martin, called Sint Maarten, sending the island in a "total blackout", the prime minister said on Thursday (September 7).

In a video released by the Dutch Navy on Friday, William Marlin said houses and schools were destroyed and storage capacity in water tanks had been reduced by half.

The Netherlands' HNLMS Pelikaan, a logistic support vessel from Curacao, arrived to deliver military vehicles such as bulldozers and military ambulances and the military gathered information from the public in Philipsburg.

Marlin also reported some looting in the capital, and Dutch military personnel were patrolling the streets of Philipsburg.
