Juppe: EU states to award Serbia candidacy this week

BRUSSELS - EU countries will agree this week to make Serbia a candidate to join the bloc, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said on Monday, after Serbia last week resolved some long standing differences with its former province of Kosovo.
Granting Serbia EU candidate status is a crucial step towards opening formal accession negotiations. The negotiation process is aimed at harmonizing Serbia's legislation with EU standards and will take years to conclude.
"It's done; the conditions set have been met," Juppe told reporters at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
He said formal approval would come from a meeting of EU ministers on Tuesday and at a summit of EU leaders on Thursday and Friday, but said: "Today, there were no objections."
