Khamenei, Ahmadinejad urge unity as new parliament opens

Iran on Sunday held the first session of its new parliament, with a message from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urging members of the ninth Majlis to maintain unity, Iran's Fars News Agency reported.
The parliament is dominated by hardliners associated with Khamenei's camp who ran away with elections at the expense of allies of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad which concluded earlier this month.
Khamenei stated that the inauguration of the parliament sent a message to the world that Iran would continue to persevere in its system of "Islamic democracy" despite "huge amounts of animosity exercised against it," according to Fars.
Ahmadinejad also addressed the opening session of the Majlis, saying that the parliament and his government must act in concert to withstand pressure from the country's enemies, the Xinhua news agency reported.
