Obama praises Iran prote

US President Barack Obama praised "the courage and the conviction of the Iranian people" while condemning Iran's Islamic government for attacking demonstrators with "the iron fist of brutality."
Speaking briefly after remarks Monday about an abortive Christmastime terror attack against a US airliner, Obama said the Iranian troubles were caused by leaders' decision "to govern through fear and tyranny" but said that will not force the people's aspirations to go away.
He demanded "the immediate release of all who have been unjustly detained within Iran" and promised that the US would "continue to bear witness to the extraordinary events that are taking place there."
