Report: Egypt cancels high holiday services due to security

Authorities in Egypt have forbidden the last active synagogue in the country from holding high holiday services for the first time in 176 years, Egyptian state news outlet Al-Ahram reported Monday. The services were cancelled over security considerations, according to the report.

Every year, Israelis of Egyptian descent travel to Egypt in order to form a minyan so that holiday services can be held. Egypt has thus far denied several Israelis permission to travel during the holidays, Al-Ahram cited Rabbi Abraham Nino-Dayan as saying.

President of the International Association of Egyptian Jews in Israel, Livana Ramez, described the turn of events as "the end of Jewish life in Egypt," Ahram quoted her as telling the BBC.
