Report: Egypt Islamists sending Suleiman death threats

Egypt's Islamists have sent death threats to Hosni Mubarak's former intelligence chief, Egyptian newspapers reported on Monday.

Since Omar Suleiman announced his bid for Egypt's presidency two days before the deadline to apply, Islamist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood have accused Suleiman of running under the influence of Egypt's military rulers, widely unpopular in post-revolution Egypt.

Still, Suleiman has a strong popular base, having said he decided to run last-minute due to pressure mounted on him by his supporters. Within a day after announcing his candidacy, the former spy chief garnered 72,000 signatures by eligible voters, more than double the requisite 30,000 needed to run, according to Dubai-based Al-Arabiya's English-language website.

Suleiman has denied any relations to the Supreme Council of Armed Forces, telling Egyptian newspaper Al Akhbar the ruling generals have "no relation, neither negatively nor positively, with my decision to join the race for the presidency," according to Al-Arabiya.
