The State Attorney's Office issued an indictment against Bat Yam Mayor Shlomi Lahiani at Tel Tel Aviv District Court on Tuesday for allegedly taking bribes, fraud and breach of trust.
Lahiani is suspected of taking bribes to advance the interests of local businessmen in Bat Yam and asking nine municipality employees to take bank loans and transfer the money to him.
Lahiani is also accused of a conflict of interest for holding partial ownership in a local newspaper which the Bat Yam municipality bought advertising space from.
A tax crimes case pending against the mayor was thrown out due to lack of evidence.
The indictment comes some three weeks before municipal elections on October 22 in which Lahiani was running for reelection as Bat Yam mayor.
It was not clear if Lahiani would be forced to resign his position or if he could still stand for election later this month.
