Thai PM says ASEAN wants to help push North Korea talks

Southeast Asian countries want to help bring North Korea back to denuclearization talks and think a regional security gathering they will host this summer can play a role, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Monday. Abhisit said the ASEAN regional forum will be a good opportunity for dialogue. It includes North Korea and the five other countries negotiating over its nuclear program in the stalled "six-party talks," as well as the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. "All of the six countries are present there, so we'll do what we can to make sure the talks resume," Abhisit told broadcaster APTN on the sidelines of a special South Korea-ASEAN summit meeting. Abhisit said that senior officials from ASEAN and South Korea were working on a statement to be issued Tuesday and that it would include "our desire to see peace and security and what the region can offer to do" on North Korea. "Obviously we want everybody to respect the UN resolutions.
