Tunisia tense after president's ouster

TUNIS, Tunisia — Plumes of black smoke were wafting in the skies over Tunis on Saturday morning, with the source of the burning unclear. The usually bustling main street downtown, Avenue Bourguiba, was nearly deserted.

Tunisian airspace is still closed early Saturday, a day after a state of emergency was declared.

Overnight, plainclothes police were seen hustling some people off the streets of Tunis, which was under curfew. One was clubbed, another was dragged on the ground. It was a sign the president's departure hadn't fully restored calm.
