US hits Iran with new economic sanctions

WASHINGTON  — The United States is expanding punitive sanctions against Iran over its nuclear and missile programs and support for the Lebanese militant group Hizbullah.
The Treasury Department on Tuesday added five Iranian companies linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the state-owned shipping line, including two banks and a freight forwarder, to its financial blacklist.
The sanctions bar the firms from the US financial system and freeze any assets they may have in US jurisdictions. The executive director of one of the firms was also blacklisted.
