Venezuela's VP says gov't united after Chavez's speech

CARACAS - Venezuela's vice president said the government was united after an emotional speech on Thursday by President Hugo Chavez announcing he had undergone successful surgery to remove cancerous cells from a tumor.

Flanked by government ministers and speaking on state television shortly after Chavez's speech, Vice President Elias Jaua said Chavez's wide-reaching socialist reforms would be "deepened" despite the president's ill health.

There has been speculation that the socialist leader's sickness and absence from the political stage will prompt infighting and jostling for power among his closest allies.
