OLYMPIC GOLDS
Gymnasts Artem Dolgopyat, 24, and Linoy Ashram, 22, won gold medals for Israel at the Tokyo Olympics on August 1 and August 7, respectively. “It was an amazing feeling to stand on the podium in first place,” said Ashram. “I don’t really have the words – I am still in heaven,” said Dolgopyat, whose family made aliyah from Ukraine. His mother, Angela, told Radio 103 that because she was not Jewish, “the state won’t let him get married,” referring to the lack of civil marriage in the country. In response, Alternate Prime Minister Yair Lapid and Labor leader Merav Michaeli both vowed to take steps to enable Dolgopyat to marry his girlfriend in Israel.
