123,000 people fall below the poverty line in 2009

Following the global crisis at the end of 2008, 15,000 families and 123,500 individuals fell below the poverty line, according to statistics released by the National Insurance Institute on Monday.
Welfare and Social Services Minister Isaac Herzog addressed the report at a press conference, saying that poverty is one of the main dangers to the State of Israel.
"We like to talk about poverty, but not about the poor," said Herzog.
Israel's recent inclusion in the Organization of Economic Development and Co-operation (OECD) raised the economic standards under which the country must operate. In light of this fact, Herzog said that Israel must do more to fight poverty.
The welfare and social services minister said that he plans on presenting a report to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the government on the poverty statistics and the manner in which Israel can combat the problem.
