B’Tselem announced on Wednesday that the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court sentenced Ha’il Ibrahim, a border policeman convicted of attacking a 13-year-old Palestinian boy in Hebron nearly four years ago to 75 days community service.The sentence was handed down last month and included a four-month suspended prison sentence valid for four years as well as NIS 2,000 to be paid to the boy, Yunes Abu Ermileh, B’Tselem – The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, said.In August 2009, Ibrahim attacked the boy while he was on duty near the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron, the NGO said.When Ermileh did not comply with Ibrahim’s demand to be quiet, he ran after the boy, flung his police helmet at him, knocked him to the ground and kicked him, causing the boy trauma to his back and shoulder.Judge Cjana Miriam Lomp wrote in the sentence: “Any act of violence, and particularly one against a minor, a 13-yearold boy, perpetrated while the defendant is wearing a law enforcement uniform and is stationed in this role must be viewed with the greatest severity.Instead of enforcing the law, because of a personal argument, he chose an act of violence that resulted in bodily harm.”Such convictions of border police are extremely rare relative to the number of reported incidents, B’Tselem said.
