Bigger chief rabbi election panel okayed

A bill initiated by Hatnua MK Elazar Stern to increase the election committee for Israel’s chief rabbis was approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation on Sunday, and will now advance through the legislative process.
Stern’s bill will increase the size of the committee from 150 to 200 members, with all 50 of the new members to be women to balance the complete absence of women from the committee as it stands today.
It is understood that both Likud and Bayit Yehudi had requested that the bill be removed from the Ministerial Committee’s agenda on Sunday “for further discussion,” but the bill was nevertheless put to a vote and passed.
A similar bill proposed by MK Aliza Lavie has also been approved.
