Heavy rains thrash Italy, at least 3 dead in car

ROME — Firefighters say at least three people have died after their car was swept into a flooded underpass as heavy rains thrashed north-central Italy.

Fire department engineer Enrico Mencagli says the car was discovered early Tuesday by divers in Prato, an industrial city north of Florence. He says a second car was discovered in the same underpass, but it wasn't immediately clear if there were people inside.

He said the three victims were of Chinese origin. Prato is home to Italy's garment industry which employs large numbers of Chinese immigrants.

The storm Monday and early Tuesday flooded streets, collapsed at least one house and downed trees and power lines in much of coastal Liguria and Tuscany.
