Online donors raise over $10,000 for Palestinian hacker denied reward from Facebook

Online donors have raised over $10,000 via a fundraising website for a Palestinian security researcher who was denied a reward from Facebook for his discovery of a glitch in the social media network.

One day after the "crowdfunding" page was launch on GoFundMe, the internet community had provided $11,095 to support the cause of Khalil Shreateh.

After failed attempts to contact Facebook, Shreateh accessed the page of Facebook CEO and founder Marc Zuckerberg by taking advantage of a glitch that would allow any of the social media network's users to post on a stranger’s wall, exposing a flaw in security settings designed to help users keep their pages private, Al Arabiya reported on Monday.

While Facebook has a reward policy for hacker who successfully bypass their security system, Hacker News reported that the social media site responded by saying Shreateh had violated its terms of service and would not be compensated for his discovery.

"Khalil Shreateh found a vulnerability in Facebook.com and, due to miscommunication, was not awarded a bounty for his work. Let us all send a message to security researchers across the world and say that we appreciate the efforts they make for the good of everyone," Marc Maiffret, who created the fundraising page for Shreateh, wrote as part of the campaign's description.
