UK soccer club files anti-Semitism complaint

English soccer team Chelsea has submitted an official complaint to the Malaysian Football Association for anti-Semitic abuse directed towards one of its players, Israeli Yossi Benayoun, during a friendly match in Kuala Lumpur last week.
In a statement made on Wednesday on the Chelsea FC website, the club stated “We believe Yossi was subjected to anti-Semitic abuse by a number of supporters at the game. Such behavior is offensive, totally unacceptable and has no place in football.”
Malaysia’s population has no diplomatic ties with Israel. Earlier this month, the government-backed Utusan Malaysian newspaper ran an editorial saying that an anti-government protest could allow “foreign Jews” to interfere in government affairs.
