In recent years, public awareness of the dangers inherent in microplastics has been growing – tiny plastic particles that penetrate food, water and even the air we breathe. Studies point to their presence in various parts of the body, in the blood, lungs and even in the placenta, raising worrying questions about their possible effect on health – because our body is unable to get rid of them independently in an efficient manner.
However, there is good news – it turns out that kimchi, a Korean dish composed of fermented cabbage, contains probiotic bacteria that support the gut microbiome, digestion and immune system health – and also assist in removing microplastic particles from the gut. A study conducted in laboratory models and mice presented preliminary results, and therefore researchers still need studies in humans to determine if these bacteria can also assist in clearing microplastic particles from the human digestive system.
The researchers of the new study tested a specific strain of lactic acid bacteria from kimchi in a model created in the lab, to see how they react against microplastic particles in the digestive system. In the laboratory model, the bacteria bound to 57% of the microplastic particles. Mice that received the probiotic strain also excreted double the amount of microplastics in their stool compared to mice that did not receive the dose of good bacteria.
Meanwhile, it is too early to know if eating regular kimchi will have the same effect in humans – but it is always worth a try, because it is a tasty dish that has various health benefits. The fermentation process that occurs in the preparation of the dish creates good bacteria that can move and grow in our intestines, and the fiber in kimchi can serve as prebiotics to nourish the good bacteria.
Alongside the probiotic bacteria, there is also dietary fiber in kimchi, a combination that may assist in reducing constipation, improving bowel activity and reducing bloating in some people. In addition, the vegetables, garlic, ginger and chili pepper in kimchi contain antioxidant compounds that may assist in reducing oxidative damage and inflammation in the body.
Kimchi contains vitamins A, C and K, alongside various minerals, which contribute to the health of the bones, skin and immune system. Some studies have found that consuming fermented foods may be linked to an improvement in metrics such as cholesterol levels and blood lipids, although further research is required on the matter.

There are several other habits that you can adopt for yourselves to reduce exposure to microplastic particles, including a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and foods that are as minimally processed as possible. Alongside this, it is important to maintain a healthy gut microbiome, exercise regularly and reduce the use of plastic as much as possible – to drink water that is not in a plastic bottle and to use kitchen utensils made of silicone, wood, stainless steel or glass. Experts recommend the most important tip – if you heat food in a microwave, it is recommended that it not be inside a container made of plastic.
