Arab-Israeli suspect attacks off-duty police officer with screwdriver

An off-duty police officer was assaulted in the capital’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood Monday afternoon by a suspect believed to be an Arab-Israeli, in what police are investigating as a possible terrorist-related attack.
According to Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld, at approximately 4:30 p.m. the officer, who was in plain clothes, was accosted by the suspect, who attempted to impale him with a screwdriver without provocation.
“The officer fired a warning shot into the air with his side arm in self-defense and the suspect then fled the scene in his car,” said Rosenfeld. “Police unites arrived at the scene and searched the general area and found the suspect’s car abandoned roughly one kilometer away.”
Rosenfeld said the officer was unharmed in the attack and that police are investigating whether it was a criminal or terrorist-related incident.
“We know the suspect’s identity and plan to make an arrest soon,” he said.
