New proposal: 50,000 Birthright participants per year

Israel will increase the number of participants on Birthright tours, with the aim of reaching 50,000 per year by 2013, according to a new proposal discussed in Sunday’s cabinet meeting. According to the plan, one in two eligible Diaspora Jews will take part in the all-inclusive free youth trips. During the meeting, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu praised the Birthright program for successfully strengthening ties between Israel and Jewish communities throughout the world. “It is important that young Jews get to know Israel and our wonderful people and heritage” firsthand, Netanyahu was quoted as saying.
