Upgraded version of Prevnar vaccine now available for kids

The Health Ministry is now offering an improved version of the anti-pneumococcus vaccine - called Prevnar 13 - to infants, replacing the Prevnar 7 vaccine given at well-baby (tipat halav) clinics since July 2009.
Given in three doses at two months, four months and a year, the vaccine protects against 13 strains of pneumococcus that can cause pneumonia, meningitis and blood infection in children up to the age of five. Israel is thus one of the first countries in the world to offer the improved version as part of its free vaccination schedule.
