Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Ya’alon said Tuesday that while Israel hopes international efforts to thwart Iran’s nuclear aspirations will succeed, it must act as if it can depend on nobody to protect it from the Iranian threat but itself.
“We must aspire to a situation in which the righteous work will be done by others, but act as if, ‘if not me, who,’” Ya’alon said in an interview with Army Radio, making use of a Hebrew adage touting self reliance.

The Hebrew media has been full of reports over the last few days about discussions in Jerusalem about the possibility of launching an attack on Iranian nuclear development installations.
A report in Yediot Aharonot on Tuesday stated that the US is working on several levels to pressure the UN’s Security Council into imposing harsher sanctions on Iran. They attributed the pressure to a UN International Atomic Energy Agency report due out this month, which they say indicates considerable progress in Tehran’s development of its military nuclear program.
The US is concerned that the report may trigger Israeli actions against Iran, Yediot concluded.
Speaking at the opening of the winter session of the Knesset on Monday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu made reference to the Iranian threat.
“Iran is continuing in its attempts to arm itself with nuclear weapons,” he said. “A nuclear Iran will threaten the Middle East, the world and Israel.”
