Police: 8 insurgents killed in Russian Caucasus

Eight rebels were killed Saturday in clashes with police and special forces along the border of Chechnya and Ingushetia, Russian authorities reported. A statement from the Chechen Interior Ministry said the clashes included one near the Ingush village of Chemulga in which four fighters were killed. It said all the clashes were the result of counterterrorism operations by police and special Interior Ministry forces. Also Saturday, the Interior Ministry in Dagestan said an officer was shot dead. Ingushetia and Dagestan are plagued by near-daily attacks on police that are variously attributed to criminal gangs and to insurgents inspired by the separatist fighting that devastated neighboring Chechnya.
