Portugal minister meets Gaddafi envoy in Lisbon

LISBON - An envoy from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi met Portugal's foreign minister on Wednesday to explain Tripoli's view of the conflict in the north African country, the Portuguese foreign ministry said.

"Foreign Minister Luis Amado agreed to meet today in Lisbon with a Libyan emissary, on the request of the latter, in order to receive information on the situation in Libya," a foreign ministry statement said.

The ministry said later the two had met in a Lisbon hotel.

Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates was one of only a few EU leaders who attended an EU-African union summit in Tripoli in December.

Portugal will chair the United Nations Security Council's committee on sanctions for Libya starting this week.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Libyan government emissaries also appear to have flown to Brussels to talk to European Union and NATO officials meeting on Thursday and Friday.
