US: Mubarak will find making Gamal his successor difficult

US diplomats predict that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will have difficulty persuading the military elite in his country to accept his son Gamal as his successor, reported Israel Radio on Wednesday.
According to memos written three years ago by Francis Richardson while he was the US ambassador in Cairo, Gamal, 46 was not an army officer and apparently did not even complete his mandatory military service.
Mubarak could turn Gamal into his successor if he resigns from his position, but if he continues to serve as president until his death, the situation will become complicated and there is no guarantee that the army will support his son as president.
Egyptian presidential elections are scheduled to take place next year, and it is still undertain whether Mubarak, 82, will run for another term.
