France hopes EU adopts Assad sanctions Monday

France hopes European Union foreign ministers will extend sanctions against Syrian President Bashar Assad on Monday, the foreign ministry said on Friday.

The 28-nation bloc decided last week to impose sanctions, such as travel bans and asset freezes, on 13 of Assad's closest allies in response to a violent crackdown on pro-reform protests, on top of an arms embargo already in place.

"There will be a discussion (at the EU foreign ministers meeting on Monday) that we hope will be conclusive on Syria, additional sanctions (and) notably those that could be established against Bashar Assad," the ministry said in a statement.

The United States imposed sanctions on Assad and six senior officials on Wednesday in an escalation of pressure on his government to halt its bloody crackdown on protesters.
